Cancer Prevention: Findings and Recommendations of a new study
A new report, by American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund, makes following recommendations for Cancer Prevention:
- A BMI i.e. body mass index (weight divided by height squared - calculate) of between 18.5 and 23.
- One hour of moderate exercise, such as swimming or housework, a day or 30 minutes of vigorous exercise, such as jogging or football.
- Avoid sugary drinks and processed food.
- Eat wholegrains and beans at every meal and at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily. Limit starch.
- Only 500g of red meat a week, ie two 8oz steaks. Avoid processed meat, ie bacon, ham, burgers, salami.
- Less than one unit of alcohol a day for women; two units a day for men.
- No more than six grams of salt a day.
- Avoid supplements to protect against cancer.
- Mothers should breastfeed for six months.
This study is being considered most thorough in determining the relation between obesity and cancer. It has been found that when it comes to cancer, obesity is as bad as smoking. So if you are over-weight smoker, and are not able to quit smoking then at least lose a few pounds. And if you are a over-weight non-smoker you know what to do before you complain about those smokers around you! :-)
